ABSTRACT

The research and development of alternative treatments for snakebites (e.g., medicinal plants) is necessary due to the high costs of the existing ones. The effects of the aqueous extracts from Jacaranda decurrens leaves, roots, and xylopodium were analyzed upon the venom-induced (Bothrops spp. and Crotalus spp.) systemic and local toxicity. The extracts were able to partially inhibit the phospholipase activity of the venoms from Bothrops jararacussu and Crotalus durissus terrificus. The myotoxic, edema-inducing, coagulant, and hemorrhagic activities were also inhibited. The SDS-PAGE showed that the venom proteins were intact after their incubation with the extracts. This suggests that the possible mechanism of inhibition is not related to the degradation of the protein but rather to their binding to specific sites of the enzymes. The extracts significantly prolonged the survival time of animals in the lethality assay performed with Crotalus durissus terrificus venom and its toxin (crotoxin). The anti-ophidic activity of medicinal plants may aid in the management of snakebites in distant locations by reducing the victim’s local effects and time to heal.

Aim: Since other species of the Bignoniaceae Family presented of antispasmodic activity, it was decided, by chemotaxonomic criterion, to determine the antispasmodic activity of the leaves of Arrabidaea brachypoda. Methodology: the segments of the rat jejunum were suspended in glass vats containing specific saline solution, at an appropriate temperature, and after stabilization period, were stimulated by a contractile agent to observe the inhibitory or relaxing effect of EH-FAB. Results: EH-FAB showed the presence of 10 compounds, mainly rutin and it has an antispasmodic activity as it inhibits the phasic component and relaxes the tonic component of the contraction in isolated rat jejunum. To assess the mechanism of antispasmodic action, cumulative curves to the CCh were performed in which a non-competitive antagonism was observed, due to a displacement of the control curve to the right and reduction of the maximum contraction effect (Emax). Afterward, the participation of the calcium and/or potassium channels was evaluated by increasing the extracellular potassium, and it was observed that the EH-FAB relaxed the rat jejunum, suggesting the participation of the Ca2+ channels. To corroborate that hypothesis, the EH-FAB was tested against cumulative curves to Ca2+ in a free depolarizing solution of Ca2+, and it was observed that there was a shift of the curve to the right with a reduction in Emax. Conclusions: EH-FAB presents antispasmodic activity in isolated rat jejunum and it is suggested to block the influx of Ca2+ through voltage-gated calcium channels, signaling the therapeutic potential for the treatment of colic and/or diarrhea.(AU)

ABSTRACT

En la estación científica de Villa Carmen, situada cerca de Pillcopata, Cusco, Perú (S 12°53.687' - W 71°24.232', 533 m), encontramos orugas de Michaelus phoenissa (Hewitson, 1867) (Lycaenidae), consumiendo flores de Senna alata (L.) Roxb. (Fabaceae). La mayoría de las orugas se encontraban en el último estadio (entre 1 y 1.5 cm de longitud), no visibles a primera vista, ya que se alojaban en las flores no abiertas. La crianza permitió obtener cuatro adultos, dos hembras y dos machos y ningún parasitoide. Se compara las plantas hospederas de M. phoenissa con otras especies hospederas del genero de Michaelus Nicolay, 1979.


In Villa Carmen, a scientific station near Pillcopata, Cusco, Peru (S 12°53.687' - W 71°24.232', 533 m), we found caterpillars of Michaelus phoenissa (Hewitson, 1867) (Lycaenidae) consuming flowers of Senna alata (L.) Roxb. (Fabaceae). The caterpillars were mostly last instars (between 1 and 1.5 cm in length). They were not visible at first sight because they lodged in unopened flowers. We reared two female and two male adults. None of the immature stages was parasitized. We compare the food plants of M. phoenissa with those of others species of Michaelus Nicolay, 1979.

ABSTRACT Antioxidants from natural sources hold high values regarding their indispensible roles in the development of nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products. Oroxylum indicum L. is a common medicinal plant with a wide range of therapeutic properties, including a notable antioxidant potency that was reported, yet has not been subjected to more detailed studies. The present study evaluated the potency of Oroxylum indicum methanol stem bark extract, along with its hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol fractions, three flavones including baicalein, oroxylin A and chrysin using DPPH assay. In terms of IC50 values, the crude extract (65,48 µg/mL) exhibited moderate inhibitory activity which was as half potent as that of its ethyl acetate fraction (32,94 µg/mL). This fraction was also superior to the methanol and hexane fractions, as their IC50 were 57,19 and 137,95 µg/mL respectively. Remarkably, a yellow powdery sub-fraction consisted of isolated compounds showed powerful activity (32,89 µg/mL) compared to those of its components, revealing the intriguing effect of synergism while giving evidence for the theory of structure-activity relationship between some flavones and their antioxidant capability. Perpetual search for new radical scavenging agents in Oroxylum indicum is emboldened considering its partially exploited potential in this study

ABSTRACT

Tabebuia rosea germination capacity and rate have been examined under light and dark conditions. However, seeds responses to light quality, in particular to short and mid-wavelengths, are not well known. We hypothesized that short wavelengths would have a positive effect on T. rosea germination. The effects of short, mid and long-wavelengths on germination capacity, rate (germination rate index, germination rate R50, a devised index of germination rate R50- and peak value), mean daily germination and germination value were evaluated. Light quality had little effect on germination capacity; it was reduced only in darkness. Seeds under short and mid-wavelengths germinated faster (germination rate) than under any other light treatments. We concluded that although T. rosea seeds respond to all light quality treatments, the short and mid-wavelengths are the cue for increasing germination speed. For synchronizing germination, short and mid-wavelengths transmitted by red cellophane paper can be used as a pre-germinative treatment for restoration and silvicultural purposes.


La capacidad y tasa de germinación de las semillas de Tabebuia rosea han sido evaluadas bajo condiciones de luz y oscuridad. Sin embargo, aún se desconocen las respuestas a la calidad de la luz, particularmente a las longitudes de onda corta y media del espectro. Nuestra hipótesis fue que las longitudes de onda corta podrían tener un efecto positivo en la germinación de T. rosea. Se evaluaron los efectos de las longitudes de onda corta, media y larga sobre la capacidad germinativa, la tasa de germinación (índice de la tasa de germinación, tasa de germinación R50 y R50- y valor pico), germinación media diaria y valor de germinación. La calidad de la luz tuvo poco efecto en la capacidad de germinación, la cual se redujo únicamente en condiciones de oscuridad. Aunque las semillas de T. rosea respondieron de manera similar en todas las condiciones de luz evaluadas, se presentó un incremento en la velocidad de germinación cuando las semillas se sometieron a longitudes de onda corta y media, las cuales incidieron de manera positiva en la sincronización del proceso de germinación. Estos hallazgos son aplicables para la restauración y en estrategias de producción de plántulas para proyectos de silvicultura.


Examinou-se a taxa e a capacidade de germinação de Tabebuia rosea em condições de luz y escuridao; no entanto, a resposta das sementes para da qualidade da luz, em particular aos comprimentos de onda curto e médio nao são bem conhecidos. Nossa hipótese é que os comprimentos de onda curtos tém um efeito positivo sobre a germinação de T. rosea. Os efeitos de curto, médio e longo comprimentos de onda sobre a capacidade de germinação, taxa (índice de velocidade de germinação, velocidade de germinação R50 e R50- e valor de pico), média de germinação diaria e valores de germinação foram avaliados. A qualidade da luz teve pouco efeito sobre a capacidade de germinação; a germinação decresceu apenas na escuridao. A taxa de germinação de sementes sob curto e médio comprimentos de onda foi mais rápido do que em quaisquer outras condições de luz; comprimento de onda curto nao teve nenhum efeito significativo sobre os parámetros de germinação. Concluímos que, embora as sementes T. rosea respondem a todos os tratamientos de qualidade de luz, os comprimentos de onda curto e médio aceleram a velocidade de germinação. Para sincronizar a germinação, ondas de curto e médio comprimento transmitidas através de papel celofane vermelho podem ser usadas como um tratamento pré-germinativo para a restaurado e para fins silvícolas.

ABSTRACT

Species from the Bignoniaceae Family, including the genus Tynanthus, are very prevalent in the tropical Americas, with specimens found in a large part of the Brazilian territory. These plants are commonly used in traditional medicine for several purposes, and some studies have described their chemical structure, in addition to other reports related to some species from this genus. This review aimed to gather information from published works concerning species of the genus Tynanthus, as well as to detect flaws in research related to these plants, which may have great biological and pharmaceutical importance. Also, this review points out some common chemical characteristics of these species, providing information that may help new researchers to improve their knowledge about these plants.


As espécies da família Bignoniaceae possuem grande predominância na região da América tropical e entre elas, as espécies do gênero Tynanthus, com representantes em grande parte do território brasileiro. Estas plantas são comumente utilizadas na medicina tradicional para os mais diversos fins e algumas pesquisas já descrevem a constituição química além de outros estudos relacionados a alguns integrantes deste gênero. Este trabalho de revisão teve como objetivo reunir informações de trabalhos publicados a respeito das espécies do gênero Tynanthus e permitiu detectar a deficiência nas pesquisas relacionadas a estas plantas, que podem trazer consigo grande importância biológica e farmacológica. Além disto, este trabalho tornou possível apontar algumas características químicas em comum entre as espécies, trazendo informações que podem auxiliar novos pesquisadores que procuram melhorar seus conhecimentos acerca destas plantas.

RESUMO A espécie Arrabidaea chica pertencente à família Bignoniaceae é também conhecida popularmente como crajiru. É Utilizada tradicionalmente no tratamento de enfermidades da pele, inflamações, infecções, dentre outros. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produção de biomassa aérea, teor e rendimento de extrato de crajiru em função de diferentes fontes de adubo orgânico em Manaus, AM. As mudas foram formadas através de estacas e mantidas por 60 dias em casa de vegetação. O experimento foi conduzido em esquema fatorial 5x3 com delineamento em blocos casualizados onde os níveis dos fatores foram as diferentes fontes de adubo orgânico: composto (5,0 kg/m2), esterco de aves (3,0 kg/m2), casca de guaraná (4,0 kg/m2), esterco de gado (4,0 kg/m2) e controle (ausência), e os três morfotipos de crajiru. Obedeceu-se o espaçamento de 1,0x1,0 m entre planta e 2,0 m entre blocos. Após 240 dias foram avaliadas a produção de folhas e caules, relação folha/caule, teor de extratos hexânico concentrado em evaporador rotativo obtido pela fórmula: (massa do extrato/massa da amostra total)x100; e o rendimento de extrato estimado pela equação: (%extrato x massa seca total das folhas)/100. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias ao Teste de Tukey (p<0,05). As fontes de adubo orgânico promoveram melhor desenvolvimento das plantas de, exceto para o morfotipo 1. O esterco de aves proporcionou maior produção de biomassa, teor e rendimento de extratos. Dessa forma, sugere-se que a adubação orgânica propicia maior produção de biomassa, teor e rendimento de extratos de A. chica.


ABSTRACT The Arrabidaea chicaspecies belongs to the Bignoniaceae family and is also popularly known as crajiru. It is traditionally used to treat skin diseases, inflammations and infections. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biomass production, the content and the yield of crajiru extract in face of different sources of organic fertilizer in Manaus, AM. The seedlings were formed by cuttings and kept for 60 days in a greenhouse. The trial was conducted in a 5x3 factorial design with randomized block organization where the factor levels were different sources of organic fertilizer: compound (5.0 kg / m 2), chicken manure (3.0 kg / m 2), bark guarana (4.0 kg / m2), cattle manure (4.0 kg / m 2) and control (absence), and the three morphotypes of crajiru. It was obeyed the spacing between the plants (1,0 x1,0m) and the blocks (2,0m) . After 240 days it were evaluated the production of leaves and stems, the leaf / stem ratio, and the content of hexane extracts concentrated by rotary evaporation obtained by the following formula: (mass of extract / mass of total sample) x100; and the yield estimated by the equation extract: (% extract x total dry mass of leaves) / 100. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and means to the Tukey"s test (p <0.05). The sources of organic fertilizer promoted better development of plants, except for the morphotype 1. The poultry manure provided higher biomass, content and yield of extracts. Thus, it is suggested that the organic fertilizer provides greater biomass production, content and yield of A. chica extracts.

ABSTRACT

As sementes de Tabebuia aurea (sin. Handroanthus aureus Mattos), apresentam baixas taxas metabólicas, o que favorece o seu armazenamento em condições de temperaturas negativas e quando armazenadas em temperatura ambiente, há uma progressiva queda em sua viabilidade. Portanto, o objetivo é verificar a viabilidade e longevidade das sementes de Tabebuia aurea submetidas a diferentes métodos de armazenamento. Foram utilizadas no experimento 6100 sementes. Em geladeira foram armazenadas 2400 sementes, das quais 1200 foram acondicionadas em saco plástico transparente e 1200 em saco de papel Kraft. Outras 3600 sementes foram acondicionadas em temperatura ambiente, sendo 1200 sementes em saco plástico transparente, 1200 em saco de papel Kraft e 1200 em bandeja aberta. Para cada tratamento foram utilizadas quatro repetições de 25 sementes, por 12 meses, com delineamento inteiramente casualizado. As médias de germinação, plântulas normais e índice de velocidade de germinação foram transformados em (x +1)-1/2. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e as médias comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5%. Também foram modeladas regressões polinomiais para as variáveis estudas em função dos períodos de armazenamento das sementes. As sementes armazenadas em geladeira à 13 ºC mantiveram elevada germinação, plântulas normais e índice de velocidade de germinação durante os 360 dias de avaliação. O método indicado para o armazenamento de sementes de Tabebuia aurea é em geladeira, à 13 ºC, tanto em saco plástico quanto de papel.


Seeds Tabebuia aurea (syn. Handroanthus aureus Mattos), The seeds of Tabebuia aurea (syn. Handroanthus Mattos aureus), have low metabolic rates, which favors their storage conditions and freezing temperatures when stored at room temperature, there is a progressive decline in viability. Therefore, this study aims to determine the viability and longevity of seeds of Tabebuia aurea subjected to different storage methods. There were used 6100 seeds. In 2400 seeds were stored refrigerator, which in 1200 placed in transparent plastic bag and 1200 in Kraft paper bags. 3600 Other seeds were placed in room temperature and 1200 seeds in clear plastic bag, 1200 in Kraft paper bags and tray open in 1200. For each treatment, four replicates of 25 seeds for 12 months, with design was completely randomized. The average germination, normal seedlings and speed germination index were transformed into (x+1)-1/2. The data were submitted to ANOVA and means compared by Tukey test at 5%. Also regressions polynomials were modeled for the variables study in function of the periods of storage of the seeds. The seeds stored in the refrigerator at 13 °C maintained a high germination rate and normal seedling germination rate during the 360 days of evaluation. The method suitable for the seed storage of Tabebuia aurea is in the refrigerator at 13 °C, both in plastic and paper.

ABSTRACT

Carobinha (Jacaranda decurrens Cham. ssp. symmetrifoliolata Farias & Proença) é uma planta medicinal que ocorre no Cerrado de Mato Grosso do Sul. A espécie vem sendo amplamente utilizada pela medicina popular como depurativa do sangue e cicatrizante de feridas uterinas e dos ovários, resultando na sua exploração predatória. Por ser uma espécie identificada recentemente, os estudos sobre adaptação ex situ são ainda escassos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento, o desenvolvimento, e a produção da carobinha cultivada ex situ em cinco espaçamentos entre plantas dentro das fileiras, em parcelas adubadas com e sem cama semidecomposta de frango de corte. O experimento foi desenvolvido no Horto de Plantas Medicinais (HPM) da Universidade Federal da Grande Dourados - UFGD, em Dourados-MS, de abril de 2006 a outubro de 2007. Os espaçamentos entre plantas foram: 0,30; 0,35; 0,40; 0,45 e 0,50 m, sendo a cama de frango aplicada na dose de 10 t ha-1 nas parcelas com este tratamento. O ensaio fatorial 5x2, foi conduzido no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, sendo a parcela constituída de 4,5 m², com quatro repetições. As mudas foram obtidas a partir de sementes coletadas de uma população de 40 plantas nativas, distribuídas ao acaso, em área de cerca de 100 m² com vegetação característica de Cerrado. Durante o cultivo avaliou-se a altura das plantas a cada 30 dias a partir de 150 até 480 dias após o transplante (DAT). As plantas foram colhidas aos 480 DAT, quando avaliou-se as massas fresca e seca da parte aérea, raízes, área foliar, e o comprimento e o diâmetro da maior raiz. A altura máxima (1,58 m) foi alcançada aos 471 DAT no espaçamento de 0,50 m entre plantas, tratadas com a cama de frango. Os dados de produtividade foram influenciados significativamente pelos espaçamentos, mas não pela adição da cama. O rendimento de massa seca das folhas por hectare não foi influenciado pelo espaçamento. A máxima área foliar foi obtida no espaçamento 0,50 m. Os maiores valores de massa seca de caules por hectare ocorreram no espaçamento de 0,30 m. Os maiores diâmetros de raiz, de xilopódio, e de caule, ocorreram no espaçamento 0,30 m, sendo os máximos valores de comprimento de raiz e de xilopódio também observados neste espaçamento. Os maiores rendimentos de massa seca de raiz (4,564 t ha-1) e de xilopódio (2,102 t ha-1) foram obtidos no espaçamento 0,30 m. Pelos resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que para se obter maiores produções de carobinha ela deve ser cultivada no espaçamento de 0,30 m, independente da cama de frango.


Jacaranda decurrens Cham. ssp. symmetrifoliolata Farias & Proenca, commonly known as carobinha, is a medicinal plant which occurs in the Cerrado of Mato Grosso do Sul. The species is widely used in folk medicine as a blood purifying and for healing wounds of uterine and ovarian cancers, which leads to its extensive and predatory exploitation. As it is a newly identified species, studies on its adaptation ex situ are still rare. Thus, the objective of this experiment was to evaluate the early development and yield of the species cultivated ex situ using five different plant spacing within the ranks and applying semicomposed broiler litter in the plots. The experiment took place at the Garden of Medicinal Plants from the Federal University of Grande Dourados ( UFGD), between April 2006 and October 2007. Plant spacings were: 0.30, 0.35, 0.40, 0.45 and 0.50 m, with broiler litter applied at 10 ton ha-1 in plots. The 5x2 factorial trial was designed as randomized blocks, with 4.5 m² plot area and four replications each. The seedlings were obtained from seeds collected in a natural germoplasm bank of 40 plants, randomly distributed in an area of about 100 m² with typical Cerrado vegetation. During cultivation, the height of the plants was evaluated every 30 days from 150 to 480 days after transplanting (DAT). Plants were harvested at 480 DAT, when fresh and dry matter of shoots, roots, leaf area and length and diameter of the largest root were assessed. The maximum height (1.58 m) was reached at 471 DAT at 0.50 m spacing between plants when poultry litter was applied. The yield data were influenced significantly by the spacing, but not by the addition of the broiler litter. The yield per hectare of dry mass of leaves was not influenced by plant spacing, however maximum leaf area was also obtained at 0.50 m spacing. The highest values of dry mass of stems per hectare were obtained at 0.30 m between plants, as well as the largest diameters of root, xylopodium and stem and the maximum length of root and xylopodium was also observed under this plant spacing. Someway, the highest yields of dry mass of root (4.564 t ha-1) and xylopodium (2.102 t ha-1) occurred when used 0.30 m plant spacing. Based on these results, we concluded the species achieves higher yields when grown in 0.30 m plant spacing, independent of the addition of poultry litter.

ABSTRACT

Infectious diseases are a worldwide public health problem. There is growing research in the field of new plant-based drugs for treating such diseases. Our objective was to perform a systematic literature review to evaluate the anti-infectious activity (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiparasitic) attributed to plants of the Tabebuia (Bignoniaceae) genus. We conducted a search for the period of 2000-2013 in ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Napralert and SciELO databases using the following MeSH terms: Tabebuia, biological activity, bioactive compounds, chemical compounds, diseases, traditional medicine, tropical infections, infections and treatment. We found ethnobotanical and experimental (in vitro) evidence supporting the use of Tabebuia species for treating infectious diseases. In addition, the compounds responsible for their antimicrobial activity have been isolated, and their structures have been elucidated, emphasizing among them naphthoquinones such as lapachol. Natural products isolated from Tabebuia plants may be an alternative for developing new anti-infectious agents.


Dada la importancia de las enfermedades infecciosas como problema de salud pública a nivel mundial y la búsqueda de nuevos medicamentos basados en plantas para tratar dichas enfermedades; se realizó una revisión sistemática de literatura con el fin de evaluar la actividad anti-infecciosa (antibacteriana, antifúngica, antiviral y antiparasitaria) reportada en plantas pertenecientes al género Tabebuia (Bignoniaceae). Las bases de datos fueron: ScienceDirect, Scopus, Pubmed, Embase y Napralert, SciELO, durante 2000 - 2013. Se utilizaron términos en MeSH como: Tabebuia, biological activity, bioactive compounds, chemical compounds, diseases, traditional medicine, tropical infections, infections and treatment. Existe evidencia tanto etnobotánica como experimental (in vitro) que soporta el uso de especies del género Tabebuia en el tratamiento de enfermedades infecciosas. Adicionalmente, se encontró reportado y se esclareció estructuralmente los compuestos responsables de la actividad antimicrobiana, donde se destacan naftoquinonas como el lapachol. Se concluye a partir de la revisión que los productos naturales aislados de las plantas del género Tabebuia podrían considerarse alternativas para el desarrollo de nuevos agentes anti-infecciosos.


Dada a importância das doenças infecciosas como problema de saúde pública a nível mundial e a procura crescente de novos medicamentos baseados em plantas para tratar tais doenças, realiza se uma pesquisa sistematizada da literatura com o fim de avaliar a atividade anti-infecciosa (antibacteriana, antifúngica, antiviral y antiparasitária) reportada em plantas pertenecientes ao género Tabebuia (Bignoniaceae). Foi realizada uma pesquisa nas bases de dados ScienceDirect, Scopus, Pubmed, Embase y Napralert, assim como em SciELO, durante o período 2000 - 2013, empregando os términos MeSH: Tabebuia, biological activity, bioactive compounds, chemical compounds, diseases, traditional medicine, tropical infections, infections and treatment. Existe evidencia tanto etnobotánica como experimental (in vitro) que suporta o uso das espécies do género Tabebuia no tratamento das doenças infecciosas e adicionalmente, há sido isolado e identificado estruturalmente os compostos responsáveis da sua atividade antimicrobiana, donde se destacam as naftoquinonas como o lapachol. Os produtos naturais isolados de plantas do género Tabebuia poderiam considerar se como uma alternativa para o desarrolho de novos agentes anti-infecciosos.

Present study focuses on determination of some quantitative microscopical factors of leaves of Tecoma gaudichaudi DC includes Stomatal no., vein islet no etc. Under physicochemical standards various parameters were checked, such as ash value, acid insoluble ash value and moisture content etc. It helps in to check purity of crude drug. Ultimately it helps in evaluation of crude drug and valuable addition of pharmacognostic data towards updating of monograph of plant species.

A alelopatia estuda os efeitos direto ou indireto que uma planta exerce sobre outra pela produção de compostos químicos liberados no ambiente. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o potencial alelopático da espécie Tynanthus micranthus Corr. Mello ex. Schum. sobre diásporos de Lactuca sativa L. Foram determinados os índices de velocidade de germinação dos diásporos e os percentuais de crescimento das plântulas em presença de diferentes concentrações das amostras. A fração clorofórmica do caule inibiu a germinação na concentração de 0,8 mg e a hidroalcoólica remanescente das folhas aumentou a germinação em todas as concentrações analisadas. A fração clorofórmica do caule estimulou o crescimento do hipocótilo em todas as concentrações testadas. Estes resultados sugerem que a espécie possui compostos ativos capazes de interferir em sistemas biológicos.


Allelopathic agents are secondary metabolites produced by plants and microorganisms that have positive or negative effects on the growth and development of biological systems. The aim this study was to assess the allelopathic effects of Tynanthus micranthus on diaspores of Lactuca sativa L. The germination speed indices of the diaspores and the percent growth of seedlings were determined in the presence of various concentrations of the samples. The chloroform fraction of the stem inhibited germination at a concentration of 0.8 mg and a hydroalcoholic fraction of the leaves increased germination at all concentrations analyzed. The chloroform fraction of the stem stimulated hypocotyl growth at all concentrations tested. These results suggest that the species has active compounds capable of interfering with biological systems.

Anemopaegma arvense (Vell) Stellf. ex de Souza belongs to the family Bignoniaceae, and is popularly known as catuaba. To evaluate the cytotoxic and antimicrobial activity of A. arvense, fraction F3 and flavonoids 1 (quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside) (rutin) and flavonoid 2 (quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)-β-D-galactopyranoside) were isolated from the leaves of this plant. Fraction F3 and flavonoids 1 and 2 exhibited no antibacterial activity. Furthermore, no cytotoxic activity of fraction 3 or flavonoids 1 and 2 was observed against the tumor cells tested. However, analysis of the antifungal activity of flavonoids 1 and 2 revealed minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.5 and 0.25 mg/mL, respectively, against the Trichophyton rubrum strains tested (wild type and mutant). This study demonstrates for the first time the antifungal activity of isolated flavonoids, validating the same activity for A. arvense.

Para avaliação de sua atividade citotóxica e antimicrobiana, a fração cromatográfica F3 e os flavonoides 1 (quercetina 3-O-α-L-ramnopiranosil-(1→6)-β-D-glucopiranosídeo) (rutina) e flavonoide 2 (quercetina 3-O-α-L-ramnopiranosil-(1→6)-β-D-galactopiranosídeo) foram isolados das folhas de A. arvense. A fração 3 e os flavonoides não apresentaram atividade antibacteriana. Nenhuma atividade citotóxica foi observada para a fração F3 e para os flavonoides, quando avaliados contra as células tumorais em teste. Entretanto, e considerando a atividade antifúngica, o flavonóide 1 apresentou valor de concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) de 0,5 mg/mL, enquanto o flavonóide 2, CIM de 0,25 mg/mL contra as cepas selvagem e mutante de Trichophyton rubrum, demonstrando, pela primeira vez, que os flavonoides isolados possuem atividade antifúngica, o que valida a mesma atividade para A. arvense.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Arrabidaea chica (Humb. & Bonpl.) B. Verl., Bignoniaceae, extracts on Ehrlich solid tumor development in Swiss mice. Leaves of A. chica were extracted with two distinct solvents, ethanol and water. The phytochemical analysis of the extracts indicated different classes of secondary metabolites like as anthocyanidins, flavonoids, tannins and saponins. Ethanol (EE) and aqueous (AE) extracts at 30 mg/kg reduced the development of Ehrlich solid tumor after ten days of oral treatment. The EE group presented increase in neutrophil count, α1 and β globulin values, and decrease of α2 globulin values. Furthermore, EE reduced the percentage of CD4+ T cells in blood but did not alter the percentage of inflammatory mononuclear cells associated with tumor suggesting a direct action of EE on tumor cells. Reduced tumor development observed in AE group was accompanied by a lower percentage of CD4+ T lymphocytes in blood. At the tumor microenvironment, this treatment decreased the percentage of CD3+ T cells, especially due to a reduction of CD8+ T subpopulation and NK cells. The antitumor activity presented by the AE is possibly related to an anti-inflammatory activity. None of the extracts produced toxic effects in animals. In conclusion, the ethanol and aqueous extracts of A. chica have immunomodulatory and antitumor activities attributed to the presence of flavonoids, such as kaempferol. These effects appear to be related to different mechanisms of action for each extract. This study demonstrates the potential of A. chica as an antitumor agent confirming its use in traditional popular medicine.

Pyrostegia venusta (Ker Gawl.) Miers, Bignoniaceae, is native to the Brazilian Cerrado and popularly known as "cipó-de-são-joão". In Brazilian folk medicine, the flowers of P. venusta are used as a general tonic and a treatment for diarrhea, vitiligo, cough, and common infections and inflammatory diseases of the respiratory system. Nevertheless, there are still no studies on its possible anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects. The P. venusta hydroethanolic extract (PvHE) was used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in carrageenan-induced paw edema, peritonitis induced by lipopolysaccharide, acetic acid-induced writhing, and formalin-induced paw-licking tests in Swiss male mice. PvHE at doses of 30-300 mg/kg p.o. demonstrated anti-inflammatory effect. PvHE reduced paw edema induced by carrageenan and inhibited leukocyte recruitment into the peritoneal cavity. The extracts showed antinociceptive activity in acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin tests. Our results showed that the PvHE demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive action in mice. All the anti-inflammatory actions obtained are also suggested to due the presence of acacetin-7-O-β-glucopyranoside.

The aim of the present review is to present comprehensive information of the traditional uses, phytochemistry and pharmacology of Tecomella undulata (Family, Bignoniaceae) and to discuss future scope of research. Tecomella undulata (TU) is commonly known as desert teak (ver. Rohiro) and is traditionally for treating liver and spleen diseases, tumours, conjunctivitis, hepatosplenomegaly, syphilis, gonorrhea, hepatitis, as a blood purifier and in wound healing. Compounds such as naphthaquinone derivative, iridoid glucoside, phytosterol, fatty alcohol, flavonols, flavonoid glucoside and triterpenoids have been reported from TU. Anti HIV, anti bacterial, anti microbial, immune modulator, analgesic and hepatoprotective activities have been reported from its various aerial parts. In the present review, attempts have been made to compile research reports on TU, to assess current research trends with possible future avenues of research.

Memora nodosa (Silva Manso) Miers, Bignoniaceae, é uma planta do Cerrado utilizada popularmente como cicatrizante de úlceras e feridas externas (folhas e caules). O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar morfologicamente essa espécie e fazer o estudo anatômico de suas folhas. O estudo morfológico foi realizado à vista desarmada e com o auxílio de microscópio estereoscópico. Para o estudo anatômico as folhas foram seccionadas e as lâminas histológicas confeccionadas de acordo com as técnicas convencionais. Memora nodosa é um arbusto com folhas opostas cruzadas, recompostas, bipinadas, imparipinadas, com foliólulos pequenos, lanceolados, verde-escuros e brilhantes. A inflorescência é racemosa com flores infundibuliformes e corola amarelo-ouro; glândulas nectaríferas são observadas no terço superior do cálice; androceu com quatro estames férteis, didínamos e um estaminódio reduzido; gineceu com estilete terminal, ovário súpero, assentado sobre um disco nectarífero. O fruto é do tipo cápsula septífraga achatada, com sementes aladas. Anatomicamente a lâmina do foliólulo é hipoestomática com estômatos predominantemente paracíticos. O parênquima paliçádico é pluriestratificado, ocupando cerca de dois terços do mesofilo dorsiventral. Tricomas glandulares e tectores são observados, em maior número, nas folhas jovens.


Memora nodosa (Silva Manso) Miers, Bignoniaceae, is a Brazilian Savannah plant, popularly used as external wound and ulcer healing (leaves and stems). The goal of this research was to perform the morphological study of M. nodosa species and the anatomical study of its leaves. The morphological study was done to the naked eye and with the aid of a stereoscopic microscope. For the anatomical study leaves were sectioned and histological slides made in accordance with conventional techniques. Memora nodosa is a shrub with decussate leaves recomposed, bipinnate, imparipinnate with small leaflets, lanceolate, dark green and shining. The inflorescence is racemose with infundibuliform flowers and gold yellow corolla; nectar glands are observed in the upper third calyx; androecium with four fertile stamens, didynamus and one staminode; gynoecium with terminal style, superior ovary, seated on a nectary disc. The fruit is flattened septifragal capsule with winged seeds. Anatomically, the blade leaflet is hypostomatic with predominantly paracytic stomata. The palisade parenchyma is pluriseriate, occupying about two thirds of the dorsiventral mesophyll. Glandular and non-glandular trichomes are observed in greater numbers in the young leaves.

ABSTRACT

Ethanol extracts of eighteen Bignoniaceae species have been evaluated by the MTT assay for cytotoxicity in Vero cells and for antiviral activity against Human herpes virus type 1, Vaccinia virus and murine Encephalomyocarditis virus. Among such species, seven are reported to be of traditional medicinal use No cytotoxicity was observed for most of the extracts up to the concentration of 500 μg/mL. Fourteen (50 percent) of the 28 extracts assayed have disclosed antiviral activity with EC50 values in the range of 4.6+0.3 to 377.2+17.7 μg/mL. Only two species, Arrabidaea samydoides and Callichlamys latifolia, have shown activity against all the three viruses. The extracts were chemically characterized by their TLC and HPLC-DAD profiles. Mangiferin is the major constituent of A. samydoides but the isolated compound has been less active than the crude extract. This is the first report on the antiviral evaluation of the eighteen Bignoniaceae species assayed.


Extratos etanólicos de dezoito espécies vegetais pertencentes à família Bignoniaceae, das quais sete são descritas como de uso medicinal, foram avaliados, pelo ensaio colorimétrico do MTT, para atividades citotóxica, em células Vero, e antiviral, frente aos vírus herpes simplex-tipo 1, vaccinia e encefalomiocardite murina. A maior parte dos extratos não apresentou citotoxicidade até a concentração de 500 μg/mL. Dos 28 extratos testados quatorze (50 por cento) apresentaram atividade antiviral com valores de CE50 na faixa de 4,6+03 a 377,2+17,7 μg/mL. Somente duas espécies, Arrabidaea samydoides e Callichlamys latifolia, foram ativas frente aos três vírus. Os extratos foram caracterizados pelos seus perfís cromatográficos em CCD e CLAE-FR. Análises por CLAE-FR mostraram que a mangiferina é o constituinte majoritário em A. samydoides mas a substância isolada foi menos ativa do que o extrato bruto. Esta é a primeira vez que se relata a atividade antiviral de extratos das dezoito espécies avaliadas.

Dolichandrone falcata Seem., Bignoniaceae, is a deciduous tree commonly known as Medshingi in local areas of Toranmal region of Maharashtra, India. Its bark paste is applied on fractured or dislocated bones, used as a fish poison; bark juice is used in cases of menorragia and leucorrhoea. The leaves of the plant have afforded chrysin-7-rutinoside. The present study was carried out to investigate the anxiolytic effects of methanol extract (DFBM), ethyl acetate extract (DFBEA) and isolated compound DFB (V+VI) of D. falcata stem-bark using animal models. Anxiolytic effects were studied by elevated plus maze (EPM) and marble burying test (MBT) assay. The crude dried DFBM and DFBEA extract was prepared in doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg whereas DFB (V+VI) compound was prepared in doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg and were administered orally to mice for evaluation of anxiolytic activity. DFBEA 400 and DFB (V+VI) 200 mg/kg produced highly significant (p <0.01) anxiolytic effects in dose dependent manner by increasing the time spent on and the number of entries into the open arms of the EPM and by decreasing the number of marbles buried by mice in MBT test. This study showed that the DFBM, DFBEA extracts and DFB (V+VI) isolated compound possesses potential pharmacological active constituents flavonoids (like chrysin) which may be responsible for the anxiolytic activity.

Uma pasta da casca é aplicada em fraturas ou luxação dos ossos e usada como veneno de peixe; o suco da casca é usada em casos de menorragia e leucorréia. Das folhas da planta foi isolado crisina-7-rutinoside. O presente estudo foi realizado para investigar os efeitos ansiolíticos do extrato metanólico (DFBM), acetato de etila (DFBEA) e compostos isolados DFB (V + VI) de D. falcata utilizando a casca do tronco em modelos animais. Os efeitos ansiolíticos foram estudados por labirinto em cruz elevada (EPM) e o ensaio de esconder esferas de mármore (MBT). Os extratos bruto e seco DFBM DFBEA foram preparados em doses de 100, 200 e 400 mg/kg, enquanto que o composto DFB (V + VI) foi preparado em doses de 50, 100 e 200 mg/kg e foram administrados em camundongos para avaliação da atividade ansiolítica. DFBEA 400 and DFB (V+VI) 200 mg/kg produziram efeitos ansiolíticos significantes (p<0.01), de maneira dose-dependente, por aumentar o tempo despendido e o número de entradas nos braços abertos do EPM e por diminuir o número de esferas escondidas pelos camundongos no teste do MBT. Este estudo mostrou que os extratos DFBM, DFBEA e o composto isolado DFB (V + VI), contendo flavonóides com potencial farmacológico (como a crisina) podem ser o responsável pela atividade ansiolítica.
